As part of the return of travellers to India, the government has resumed issuing 30-day, 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist Visas under the same conditions as before the Covid-19 pandemic. The 5-year e-Tourist Visas already issued before the crisis are valid again.

The e-Visa (also known as eTV or e-Tourist Visa) is for travellers who wish to travel to India by air or sea (cruise, etc.) If you are travelling by land, please contact your consulate. You can leave India by any means.

In addition to the e-Visa, travellers wishing to visit so-called "protected" or "restricted" areas must obtain additional permits, provided only by the local authorities. These areas are found, in whole or in part, in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Lakshadweep Islands, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim or Uttaranchal. To view details of these areas and apply for a special permit ($30), click here.

Contrary to popular belief, the e-Visa does not restrict the areas you can visit in India compared to a regular visa. Most of the time, tour packages take these restrictions into account and allow you not to have to take a special permit in addition to the e-Visa, such as for Ladakh/Leh for example where group travel is tolerated without a permit.
